Overview

Epic is an Electronic Health Record (EHR), Practice Management (PM) and Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) solution provider. The software can work with various medical specialties including Behavioral Health, Cardiology, Dentistry, Gastroenterology, Genomics, Infertility, Ophthalmology, Nephrology, Obstetrics, and Radiology.

Epic offers a very robust EHR solution which can be fully customized according to the specialty needs and practice workflow. The EHR features a main dashboard which allows the physicians to view patients’ charts and systematically document their findings. The EHR module is also equipped with a NoteWriter which helps practices in increasing efficiency and allows practitioners to make important notes while charting their diagnosis. These notes can be merged with the patient’s medical records for future reference.

The telemedicine feature is also included in the EMR software package which allows providers to communicate with patients via a video platform and offers mobile and tablet functionality.

Patient Portal platform is also available with the Epic EMR software. Patients can access their Medical Summary, Prescriptions, Schedule Appointments and Request for Prescription Refills with the help of MyChart patient portal. Moreover they can also have secure communication with their Health Care Provider.

Another intelligent feature of the software is that it also speeds up payments and frees up staff time through paperless billing finances, tracks payment plans and online bill payments. It combines all outstanding balances of a patient into a single statement that patient can pay online. It also automates coding to reduce administrative overhead, shorten A/R days and increase revenue.

This health IT software is ONC-ATCB certified and fulfills all requirements for stage-2 Meaningful Use and offers a specialized dashboard to track the usage of Meaningful Use. The software is also HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) complaint which is necessary for practices to ensure that Patients Health Information (PHI) is safe from any kind of theft, lost and natural disaster.

EPIC is one of the most widley used EHRs. It was recognized as a category leader by Gartner in 2012 and named the best overall software suite by KLAS in 2013. It is primarily designed for large hospitals however it can be used by small to midsized practices as well.
